Traditional Kitchen
This kitchen was
designed for a young family who purchased an 80 yr old house
and totally renovated it. The designer had a given space to
work with but was able to change the location of windows,
move a chimney out of the room, and redesign a walk-in
pantry. The client requests included a Royal Blue 4 Oven AGA
cooker, a large SubZero, a desk for her computer, a wine
cooler and a bar area for him, with lots of convenient
storage and counterspace. She is the main cook, is
5'3''tall, and hates clutter. He is 6' tall enjoys
entertaining and good wines. The children are 8 and 10.
The clients asked for a kitchen that would complement the
traditional look of the house but still be a comfortable family
kitchen. The final design provided a variety of countertop heights
and backsplash heights to accommodate the different heights of the
users. She loved the look of 'little drawers' and glass doors but
didn't want to be able to see all the dishes so textured glass was
used in the main storage area and clear glass only in the bar area
for display. The unique corner sink provides a lower work centre
for her with the balance for this run of countertops at standard
heights. The island has two levels (35'' and 42'') with a prep
sink providing a second work centre. The walk-in pantry has an
opening window and was designed with a counter that would
accommodate the bread machine and related supplies so it never has
to moved and doesn't take up counter space. The pale yellow used
on the cabinets and main counters is offset with the royal blue on
the walls. The whimsy of the teapot and teacups in the backsplash
prevent the overall look from being too formal.
